What you'll study

This programme provides a systematic study of human structure from whole-body gross anatomy to cellular and molecular architecture. Core topics include musculoskeletal anatomy, neuroanatomy, visceral and regional anatomy, embryology and developmental anatomy, histology and microscopic techniques, and anatomy-related imaging.

Teaching emphasises hands-on learning: you will use prosections and models, histology laboratories, radiological imaging sessions and specimen-based practicals to consolidate dissection-based learning. Practical skills also include anatomical demonstration and communication, basic surgical and clinical anatomy techniques, and use of anatomical databases and digital resources.

The course is modular and progressive: early years focus on foundational structure and histology, middle stages integrate systems-based anatomy and clinical applications, and final-year modules offer advanced topics such as applied surgical anatomy, neuroanatomy, anatomical variation, research techniques and an independent research project or dissertation. There is typically the option to take a placement year or a research/industry experience between years to gain professional experience or extended research training.

Entry requirements

Keele considers applicants from a range of academic backgrounds. Successful applicants usually have strong grades in A-levels (or equivalent) with at least one science subject such as Biology, Human Biology, or Chemistry. Applicants with BTEC qualifications, Access to HE diplomas, or international qualifications are considered on their merits, particularly where the profile demonstrates relevant science content and laboratory experience.

Typical offers also expect competence in English and mathematics at GCSE or equivalent. Applicants may be invited for an interview or to provide evidence of practical experience or motivation for studying anatomy, for example through shadowing, volunteering in healthcare, or work placements.

Common pathways include further clinical training (such as medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, radiography or occupational therapy), postgraduate research degrees (MSc/PhD) and roles in biomedical research, anatomical teaching and museum or laboratory curation.

Other employment options include positions in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, forensic science, medical illustration and education, anatomy technician roles, and technical or support positions in clinical anatomy and imaging departments. The course also prepares students for professional training and specialist anatomical or surgical technician roles through its strong practical focus.
