What you'll study

The course comprises 9 standard units (216 points). Teachers who hold a recognised four-year initial teaching qualification or a Graduate Diploma in Education will normally receive recognition of prior learning (RPL) for 3 units and therefore complete 6 units. Core and elective structure includes:

• Core: DE9016L Education and Theology in Dialogue (or DE9014L and DE9015L as Part A and Part B)
• One unit in either Biblical Studies (BS) or Systematic Theology (CT)
• One unit in either Education Studies (DE) or Religious Education (DR)
• One unit chosen from Education Studies (DE), Religious Education (DR) or Systematic Theology (CT)
• Either a capstone unit or the RQ9748M Minor Thesis (a 16,000-word qualifying minor thesis that is a double unit and also fulfils the compulsory capstone requirement)
• Additional postgraduate units may be taken provided at least four units at AQF level 9 are included.

Entry requirements

Only domestic applicants who are registered to teach in Australia may apply. Applicants must hold an initial teacher qualification recognised for teacher registration in Australia and have two years of full-time teaching experience (or equivalent part-time experience). Where first language is other than English, the Admissions Policy sets English proficiency requirements. ALC operates policies for credit transfer and recognition of prior learning.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to work in faith-based learning contexts such as church schools or other religious education settings, bringing combined educational and theological competence. The programme also positions students for further academic research in education and theology, including progression to doctoral study for those who complete the qualifying minor thesis.
