What you'll study

The course is structured as a major thesis programme. Core components required during candidature include:

• Submission of an annual report for the duration of candidature.
• Satisfactory completion of confirmation of candidature.
• Where applicable, compliance with requirements of the Human Research Ethics Committee.
• Attendance and participation in a minimum of 8 hours of research seminars at the University plus either a University Research Conference or an approved College research conference in each year of candidature.
• Preparation and submission of a thesis of up to 40,000 words for examination.
• The Research Methodologies unit is delivered face‑to‑face, by workshop and/or online; supervisor meetings may be held electronically where required.

Entry requirements

Applicants must demonstrate prior study in divinity or an associated discipline equivalent to one of the following with a 75% average: a Masters by coursework, a Graduate Diploma, or a four‑year undergraduate degree with Honours. In addition applicants must have completed a research essay or thesis of at least 12,000 words graded at or above 75% (completed either within the listed awards or as part of another program). Candidates are admitted by the School of Graduate Research (SGR) Committee; English language proficiency requirements apply where the first language is not English.

Career prospects

Graduates gain advanced research skills in divinity and related fields, including mastery of research principles and methods, the ability to plan and execute substantial research, and skills in communicating findings to specialist and non‑specialist audiences. The degree provides a pathway to further research study such as the Doctor of Philosophy and equips candidates for roles that require high‑level analytical, writing and research competencies.

The course is registered for FEE‑HELP and available to domestic and overseas students. Australian Lutheran College operates credit transfer and recognition of prior learning (RPL) policies. Candidates undertaking human‑subject research must meet Human Research Ethics Committee requirements where relevant.
