Programme overview

This award gives foundational theological knowledge and practical pedagogy for teaching Religious Education/Christian Studies, particularly oriented to the worldview and Christian Studies Curriculum Framework used in Lutheran schools and early childhood services. It is offered entirely online and is available to domestic students only.

What you'll study

The GCTRE comprises four units (the equivalent of one full-time semester). Units available for this award include:

• BA8740Z Exploring the Old Testament
• BN8012L Introduction to the New Testament
• CT8012L The Christian Faith Today
• DE8007L Principles and Context of Lutheran Schooling
• DR8013L The Practice of Lutheran Education

Students normally complete the four units in sequence but may schedule them to fit elective spaces in their initial teaching degree; CT8012L can be taken as a stand-alone single unit if it fits a single elective space.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be concurrently enrolled in a graduate initial teaching qualification that makes them eligible for teacher registration in Australia, or hold an initial teacher qualification recognised for teacher registration in Australia. Where English is not the first language, the Admissions Policy English proficiency requirements apply. Admission includes a conversation with a course advisor. ALC applies credit transfer and recognition of prior learning in line with its Credit Policy.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to teach Religious Education/Christian Studies and to contribute to religious awareness, faith formation and the development of religious identity within a school community. The course develops capabilities to engage with faith traditions and to communicate religious material to students, grounded in contemporary approaches to learning and teaching Religious Education.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)
