Graduate Certificate in Education and Theology

DegreeShort Training
FieldTheology & Religious Studies

A one-level postgraduate certificate that strengthens theological understanding for people working or intending to work in faith-based education. Suited to educators, school leaders or ministry workers who want to apply theological reflection to classroom and institutional practice and who may wish to continue to higher study in education-and-theology pathways.

What you'll study

The award combines units from education-related and theology-related disciplines. Requirements include at least one half unit drawn from either Education Studies or Religious Education and at least one half unit from either Biblical Studies or Systematic Theology, with remaining half or full units drawn from postgraduate-level offerings at ALC.

  • The programme typically uses ALC postgraduate Education Studies (DE) and Religious Education (DR) units scheduled by ALC.
  • Biblical Studies (BS) or Systematic Theology (CT) postgraduate units provide the theological content.
  • Students may choose further ALC postgraduate units to complete the required equivalent of three standard units (72 points).
  • Recognition of prior learning: completion of Lutheran Education Australia programs may give credit — Connect can grant one half unit in Education Studies; Equip 1 and Equip 2 may grant up to one unit in Religious Education.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree or an approved equivalent. Where a candidate's first language is not English, the Admissions Policy sets out English language proficiency requirements. ALC applies credit transfer and recognition of prior learning in line with its Credit Policy.

Career prospects

Graduates gain a stronger theological frame for professional practice in faith-based education: enhanced capacity for theological enquiry, reflective practice and engaging diverse faith perspectives. The award is aimed at those whose vocation is education in faith contexts and can support those seeking to influence curriculum, pastoral care or faith formation in schools and related settings. Registered teachers in Australia can use this qualification as a pathway into the Master of Education and Theology; other students may progress to the Graduate Diploma in Divinity.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

The course is available only to domestic students and is registered for FEE-HELP, which can assist eligible students with tuition costs. Prospective applicants should contact ALC for advice on fees, eligibility for FEE-HELP and any institutional scholarships or support.
