What you'll study

Year one builds foundational knowledge and practical teaching experience. The curriculum mixes theory—educational psychology, curriculum theory and comparative education—with assessment, research methods and a teaching practicum.

• Semester 1 modules include: Foundations in Education (PE1013); Measurement and Evaluation in Education (PE1023); Educational Psychology (PE1033); General Methods of Teaching (PE1042); ICT for Education (PE1051). A range of subject-specific optional teaching modules are offered such as Teaching Citizenship Education, Primary Education, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, Science and Technology, English Language, Sinhala Language and Literature, History, Geography, Business Studies and Accounts, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry and ICT (PE1061–PE1191 as listed).
• Semester 2 modules include: Comparative Education (PE2202); Educational Management (PE2212); Research Methods and Action Research (PE2223); Teaching Practicum (PE2236). Optional semester‑2 modules include Educational Planning, Educational Technology, Environmental Education, Lifelong Education, Early Childhood Education and Tertiary Education (PE2241–PE2291).

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold either a degree from a recognised university or degree-awarding institute recognised by the Ministry of Education, or possess a Certificate of National Vocational Qualification Level 7.

Career prospects

Graduates are positioned for promotion within the education service as graduate teachers and education officers. The programme aims to equip participants with skills for improving teaching and learning, classroom management, assessment and educational research, supporting roles in schools and educational administration.
