What you'll study

Study centers on supervised research leading to an MPhil thesis. Core research areas explicitly listed include:

Entry requirements

  • Bachelor's honours degree (SLQF Level 6) with at least 30 credits in a relevant field.
  • Bachelor's honours degree (SLQF Level 6) with 30 credits in a related field plus successful completion of a qualifying examination.
  • Bachelor's degree (SLQF Level 5) with GPA 3.0/4.0 plus successful completion of a qualifying exam conducted after completing 30 credits equivalent to SLQF 6 in the same or related field.
  • Any qualification at SLQF Level 7 or above in a relevant field.
  • NVQ Level 7 with GPA 3.0/4.0 after completing 30 credits equivalent to SLQF Level 6 or above in a related field, subject to Senate approval.

Selection also considers academic performance, the quality of the research proposal, demonstrated research capabilities, references and the relevance of prior experience. Shortlisted applicants are interviewed. Registration rules: admittees register as MPhil Research Students (MRS) within three months; after passing a qualifying examination (typically after one year) they may register as MPhil candidates. Failure of the qualifying exam twice leads to termination of the studentship.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for research-oriented and leadership roles. Typical outcomes named by the programme include research scientist, senior engineer, business analyst/strategy consultant and research manager, and academic positions where advanced research training is required.
