What you'll study

The curriculum begins with core fundamentals and moves towards advanced production and a final collection. Year 1 modules include:

• Design Techniques and Concepts (20 credits) – visual research methodologies, practical workshops and generation of original ideas to form design projects.
• Materials and Processes part 1 (20 credits) – introduction to pattern cutting and construction techniques required to realise garments for fashion and costume sectors.
• Materials and Processes part 2 (20 credits) – extended study of fabric weight, drape and composition and how these inform construction and pattern choices for historic or speculative designs.
• Textiles for Costume (20 credits) – exploration of traditional and contemporary textile processes to create character-driven textiles, considering historic and social influences.
• Contextual Studies (20 credits) – lecture and seminar-based study of theories, contexts and cultural themes in fashion, clothing, textiles and costume, including history and contemporary film costume.
• Contemporary Issues and Creative Practice (20 credits) – introduction to key global and creative practice themes.

Across the degree students engage with 2D and 3D design, pattern cutting, manufacturing, illustration, script and character interpretation, and live/industry projects. Teaching emphasises progression from concept through to production and product placement, and culminates in an industry-ready portfolio and promotion package.

Entry requirements

Typical offers require a UCAS tariff of 88–112 points, with a minimum of two full A-levels (or equivalent such as T levels, BTEC, or Access to Higher Education in a relevant subject). Career prospects

The course prepares graduates for costume roles across film, television, theatre and other media performances by developing creative problem-solving, professional decision-making and technical making skills.
