A two-year part-time honours degree designed for serving Armed Forces physical training staff, combining sports science theory and applied coaching to improve the health, performance and operational readiness of military and emergency personnel. Suits qualified service PTIs who want both in-service professional development and transferability to civilian strength and conditioning roles.

What you'll study

Teaching covers a blend of theoretical and applied areas relevant to strength and conditioning for military and emergency-service contexts. Key study areas include physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, nutrition, research methods and data analysis, strength and conditioning practice, injury and rehabilitation, and topical contemporary issues.

  • Year 1 core modules (20 credits each): Applied Exercise Physiology; Approaches to Applied Sport and Performance Psychology; Applied Biomechanics in Strength and Conditioning; Applied Strength and Conditioning; Sports Nutrition; Military Research Methods and Data Analysis.
  • Year 2 core modules: Advanced Strength and Conditioning (20); Sports Injury and Rehabilitation (20); Topical Issues in Strength and Conditioning (20); Strength and Conditioning in Tactical Populations (20); Military Research Dissertation (40) — a MODREC-aligned military-specific research project consolidating prior learning.

Entry requirements

Open to qualified trade personnel from the Royal Army Physical Training Corps, Royal Air Force PTIs and Royal Navy/Royal Marine Physical Trainers. Career prospects

Graduates leave with an applied S&C skillset and sport science knowledge aimed at improving operational performance and wellbeing in tactical athletes. The programme prepares serving PTIs for enhanced in-service roles and provides transferable competencies for civilian strength and conditioning, rehabilitation support and performance-coaching positions.
