What you'll study

Study focuses on perioperative care across the three core phases of the acute care environment: anaesthetics, surgical (scrub) practice and post‑anaesthetic care. You will develop clinical knowledge, technical skills and professionalism through:

• simulated learning in a hyper‑realistic operating theatre environment to practise authentic scenarios;
• clinical placements with NHS partner hospitals covering anaesthetic, surgical and post‑anaesthetic practice, supported by workplace mentors;
• study of evidence underpinning perioperative care and research relevant to practice;
• assessment through a mix of written and unseen exams, OSCEs, presentations, reflective coursework, case studies, dissertation and construction of an ePortfolio;
• opportunities to gain additional clinical qualifications such as Immediate Life Support prior to course completion.

Entry requirements

Typical UCAS tariff offers are 112–136 for the three‑year full‑time route and 48–88 for the foundation year route. Equivalent qualifications listed include A level BBC, BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at DMM, International Baccalaureate 30 points, QQI/FETAC 5 distinctions in health‑care related subjects, or an Access to HE Diploma in Nursing with specified credits and grades. Applicants must list all qualifications on the application form and will be asked to provide copies.

Career prospects

Successful graduates are eligible to apply for registration as Operating Department Practitioners with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). The course reports consistently high employability with many graduates employed by NHS trusts where they completed placements. Roles after graduation centre on perioperative practice as integrated members of theatre teams working alongside surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and support staff.
