What you'll study

This joint degree teaches core journalism skills—news reporting, feature writing, multimedia production, interviewing and ethical practice—alongside a broad programme of English studies covering literature, language, and critical approaches. Modules typically include newswriting and reporting, multimedia journalism and digital storytelling, media law and ethics, journalism practice modules with newsroom simulation, and modules in fiction, poetry, drama, literary history, and contemporary critical theory.

The course is organised to blend practical and academic strands. In the early years you build foundations in writing, research methods and journalistic practice while taking introductory English modules on literary genres and language. Later years allow choice of specialised modules such as investigative journalism, broadcast journalism, creative writing, Shakespeare, modern and contemporary literature, or language variation and linguistics. Students often complete a dissertation or major project that can be a long-form journalistic investigation, a portfolio of multimedia work, or a substantial piece of literary research.
