What you'll study

This programme combines theoretical study with progressive school-based practicum. Core areas include curriculum design and implementation, teaching methods for literacy and numeracy, assessment for learning, classroom management, and educational psychology. A strong emphasis is placed on Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ao Māori across the programme, as well as culturally responsive practice for Māori and Pasifika learners.

• Foundations of teaching: professional ethics, child and adolescent development, inclusive education and behaviour management.
• Curriculum and pedagogy: planning and assessment in literacy, numeracy, science, social studies and the arts; differentiated instruction.
• Bicultural and multicultural education: Te Tiriti principles, kaupapa Māori perspectives, Pasifika education approaches, and culturally sustaining pedagogy.
• Specialist areas: inclusive classroom strategies, special and inclusive education, teaching English language learners (TESOL) and learning support.
• Professional practice: multiple practicum placements in partnered schools that increase in responsibility and complexity over the programme.
• Research and digital practice: introduction to educational research methods, inquiry-based practice and the use of digital technologies to enhance teaching and learning.

Students normally complete a sequence of block and in-school placements that are assessed alongside campus-based coursework, preparing graduates for initial teacher registration.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to meet university entrance qualifications appropriate to their country. Typical requirements include senior secondary completion with literacy and numeracy competence and the equivalent of NCEA Level 3 for domestic applicants. International applicants require a recognised secondary qualification and evidence of English language proficiency.

• Proof of English language ability if applicable (institution-accepted tests or certificates are required).
• Satisfactory police vetting and health/fitness declarations for participating in school placements; some placements may require immunisation evidence.
