What you'll study

The programme balances mathematics, programming foundations and applied computing across four years with research and industry-focused elements.

  • Year 1: computational thinking, programming methodology, data structures and algorithms, engineering mathematics (I & II), discrete mathematics, computer organisation and architecture, digital electronics, communication skills and English for academic purposes. (Semester modules include SE1012 Programming Methodology; IE1004 Computational Thinking; IE1014 Engineering Mathematics - I; SE1022 Discrete Mathematics; SE1032 Communication Skills; IE1024 Computer Organization and Architecture; IE1034 Engineering Mathematics - II; IE1044 Digital Electronics; SE1042 English for Academic Purposes; SE1052 Data Structures and Algorithms.)
  • Year 2: design and analysis of algorithms, networking fundamentals, database management, operating systems, software engineering and programming paradigms.
  • Year 3: advanced software engineering, intelligent systems, parallel computing, computer graphics, mobile and web development frameworks, research methodologies and industrial training.
  • Year 4: a research project plus advanced topics such as machine learning, information security, modelling and simulation sciences and electives including compiler construction, image processing and computer vision, deep learning and robotics.

Entry requirements

Local GCE A/L applicants must have a minimum of three "S" passes in the Physical Science stream (covering Combined Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry or ICT) and pass the faculty's special aptitude test. Cambridge/Edexcel A/L applicants require at least three "C" passes (covering Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry or Computer Science/IT) and must pass the same special aptitude test administered by the Faculty of Computing.
