A four-year honours degree that trains students to protect networks, applications and data against cyber threats; combines technical hands-on labs with governance and forensics topics. Suited to applicants who enjoy programming, systems security and investigative work and who plan technical or advisory careers in information security.

What you'll study

The curriculum builds from IT and computing foundations to specialised security practice and governance.

  • Year 1: Foundations of IT, networking, mathematics and basic security principles. Semester modules include Introduction to Programming; Data Communication Networks; Mathematics for Computing; Fundamentals of Computing; Discrete Mathematics; Data Structures and Algorithms; Software Engineering; Technical Writing.
  • Year 2: Network programming for security, database design and core cybersecurity concepts.
  • Year 3: Practical offensive and defensive skills such as penetration testing, cryptography, DevOps security, ethical hacking, plus industrial training (internship).
  • Year 4: Final cybersecurity project plus governance, risk management and compliance, digital forensics and study of emerging security technologies.
  • Tools and languages taught: Practical experience with Kali Linux, Metasploit, Burp Suite, Nmap, Wireshark, Nessus, Snort and programming with Python, C/C++, Java, JavaScript and SQL for secure coding and vulnerability analysis.

Entry requirements

Local GCE A/L candidates need a minimum of three "S" passes in the Physical Sciences or Engineering Technology streams in one sitting, or three "S" passes in any other stream plus a C pass in O/L Mathematics and completion of the SLIIT IT Bridging Programme. Applicants with Information & Communication Technology as an A/L subject and a C in O/L Mathematics are exempt from the bridging programme. Cambridge/Edexcel A/L applicants require three "D" passes in mathematics-related subjects, or three "D" passes in other subjects combined with a C in O/L Mathematics and completion of the bridging programme (exemptions apply for IT/Computer Science A/L with C in O/L Mathematics). To follow the Cyber Security specialisation students must meet the faculty's minimum GPA at the end of Year 2 Semester 1. All applicants must pass the SLIIT aptitude test.
