The Diploma in Ministry is a one-year (full-time) AQF Level 5 award that provides foundational biblical, theological and practical skills for Christian ministry across a range of contexts. It suits students seeking introductory formal training for parish, chaplaincy or other church-related roles, or those wanting a preparatory year toward higher theological study.

What you'll study

The course comprises 8 standard units (144 points). Core required units listed for the award include:

  • XD1001Z The Practice of Christian Ministry
  • XD1002Z Exploring Spirituality (listed also as Introduction to Christian Spirituality and Discipleship)
  • XD1003Z Introduction to Christian Mission

Students must also complete one standard unit (18 points) in Biblical Studies or New Testament, plus a further four standard units (72 points). Of those additional units at least 36 points must be drawn from Field D or be completed as work-integrated learning. Consult ALC for the schedule of undergraduate units for specific unit choices.

Entry requirements

General entry requires successful completion of Year 12 (or equivalent). Probationary admission may be granted to approved applicants aged 21 or older who have not completed Year 12. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the English language proficiency requirements set out in the Admissions Policy. Australian Lutheran College operates credit transfer and recognition of prior learning (RPL) under its Credit Policy.

Career prospects

Graduates will hold foundational knowledge of Christian texts and traditions and basic ministry skills suitable for responsible engagement in ministry contexts. The course develops interpersonal and teamwork competencies and the ability to reflect theologically on ministry practice, preparing students for roles in congregational ministry, church support positions, volunteer leadership, and as a stepping stone into further theological diplomas or bachelor awards.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

The Diploma is FEE-HELP eligible for domestic students, and the course can be completed fully online—useful for those balancing study with existing commitments. As an accredited University of Divinity AQF Level 5 award, it can also form the first year toward advanced diplomas or bachelor programs; contact the college for advice on fees, scholarships and credit arrangements.
